A 130-year-old box was found buried under a statue of the American general

Workers breaking the foundation of a statue of the Confederate general in the United States on Monday discovered a copper box that is said to have been buried 130 years ago. It will open on Tuesday.

The governor of the US state of Virginia, Ralph Northeim, tweeted: "They have found it. This is probably the time capsule that everyone was looking for. "It should be noted that a time capsule is a container that contains historical items and is buried for future discovery.

According to the AFP news agency, an article published in 1887 stated that the time capsule was buried under a statue of General Robert Lee and contained items such as buttons and bullets, Confederate currency, maps, the assassinated president. There are rare pictures of Abraham Lincoln and other things.

General Robert Lee led the Army in Northern Virginia during the Civil War.

The governor of Virginia said the box had been x-rayed and would be opened on Tuesday.

"Experts believe it may contain Civil War-era ammunition, coins and books."

A separate box found under the statue was opened last week, but the time capsule described in the 1887 news article did not contain the items.

It contained three soaked books, a picture and a coin in a wet cloth envelope.

These were probably the things that the sculptors had buried for the future.

The box found last week was about the size of a shoebox, but the volume discovered on Monday was twice as large.

The statue of General Robert Lee is located in Richmond, Virginia, USA, which was the capital of the South during the tension of 1861-65.

The statue was removed in September because it was one of the few slavery monuments in the West that have been removed in recent months.

The statue has been the focus of protests against racism since the assassination of black man George Floyd last year.

Remember that during the Civil War, the Confederates seceded from South America and fought to maintain slavery. However, slavery was abolished in the rest of the country.
