'Combined education system' major reason for closure of universities in Afghanistan

Abdul Baqi Haqqani, the Taliban's acting education minister in Afghanistan, has said that apart from economic problems, the main reason for the closure of universities is the mixed education system.

Acting Education Minister Abdul Baqi Haqqani said Sunday that he would create separate classes for girls and appoint additional teachers, which would require extra time and budget, according to the Afghan news agency Khaama Press.

The Education Minister had recently visited Pakistan. He said he had talked to Pakistani officials about the problems of Afghan students. He said that Pakistan has also increased scholarships for Afghan students.

"No country is allowed to give scholarships directly to Afghan students. Scholarships will be arranged through the Ministry of Education," he said.

Abdul Baqi Haqqani has proposed setting up separate universities for Afghan refugees in Pakistan.

"Pakistan is an ideal country for Afghan students who want to pursue higher education. Because this country is cheap and there are similarities for Afghans.

It should be noted that Afghan students are studying on scholarships in different universities in Pakistan.

After the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, it is difficult for girls to get higher education.

Taliban officials say separate arrangements are being made for girls at universities.

Under Western-backed regimes, women were studying in universities with a mixed education system.

The international community has also demanded that the Taliban allow girls access to higher education.
