The United States became proud after the collapse of the Soviet Union: Gorbachev

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev has said that Washington became "proud and confident" after the collapse of the Soviet Union, which led it to expand NATO's military alliance.

In recent years, President Vladimir Putin has stressed that NATO is moving closer to Russia's borders. Moscow last week demanded "legal guarantees" from the United States and its allies to stop the expansion to the east.

Referring to the resignation of former USSR leader Mikhail Gorbachev with the state-run RIA Novosti news agency, Mikhail Gorbachev said: Can? 'He spoke in support of the US Alliance, but said that maintaining some independence was important for the United States.

"They have become proud and confident," said Gorbachev, 90, pointing to the West and the United States. He declared victory in the Cold War.

Welcoming the forthcoming security talks between Moscow and Washington, he said, "I hope that these talks will yield some results."

Last week, Moscow demanded legal security guarantees from the United States and NATO, and called on NATO to refrain from recruiting new members.

Russia also said that the United States should not establish bases in the countries of the former Soviet Union.

The Russian president said on Thursday that Washington was ready to discuss the proposals and that talks could take place in Geneva early next year.

Gorbachev resigned as President of the Soviet Union on December 25, 1991, when the leaders of Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine stated that the Soviet Union no longer existed.
