Thomas West, the US special envoy for Afghanistan, has said that the United States has "warmly welcomed" the role of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Afghanistan.
According to Arab News, the remarks by the United States came after the conclusion of the 17th Extraordinary Session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers.This extraordinary meeting of the OIC was convened by Saudi Arabia and hosted at the Parliament House in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.
The purpose of the conference was to bring together Muslims and other countries and international organizations to help Afghanistan.
The participating countries decided to establish a Humanitarian Trust Fund to provide humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, in partnership with other international stakeholders, and to appoint a Special Representative for Afghanistan for the Secretary-General of the OIC.
Thomas West said: "Today's OIC meeting has been fruitful in approving the formation of the Humanitarian Trust Fund and the appointment of an OIC Special Representative. The United States warmly welcomes the role and partnership of the OIC.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has decided to appoint Ambassador Tariq Ali Bakhit, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Culture and Family Affairs, as Special Representative of the OIC Secretary-General for Afghanistan.
On the other hand, the United Nations has warned that about 23 million people (about 55% of the population of Afghanistan) are facing hunger and about 9 million are at risk of famine.
