At least 56 people, including children, were killed in an airstrike on a refugee camp in Tegrai

Addis Ababa: At least 56 people were killed and 30 others, including women and children, were injured in an airstrike on an IDP camp in Ethiopia's troubled region of Tegrai.

According to the International News Agency, an aerial bombardment was carried out on a refugee camp near the Eritrean border in the anti-government region of Tigrai in Ethiopia.

The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a crowd of 2,000 people, according to the Associated Press.

At least 56 people were killed and at least 30 were injured in what became known as the "Airstrikes," two rescue workers told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The dead and wounded included children and women who were taken to hospital. The condition of 7 injured is said to be critical. There is a chance in increase of casualties.

Clashes between armed rebels and forces have been raging in Ethiopia's anti-government stronghold of Tegrai for some time. Recently, the government had hinted at resolving the issue through negotiations by releasing several opposition leaders from Tegrai.
