US Secretary of State Anthony Blankenship has said that "the people of Tonga are deeply concerned because they are having a hard time following the eruption."
He added that the United States was ready to help its neighbors in the Pacific.
Satellite imagery shows that the sound of a volcanic eruption has reached 10,000 kilometers in Alaska.
