Abu Dhabi police have warned against collecting donations through social media, calling it a punishable offense.
According to the Sabq website, Abu Dhabi police have said that "taking advantage of Ramadan, many people run illegal donation campaigns through social media."
"Breaking the fast in poor countries, sponsoring orphans, helping widows, building mosques and running madrassas are all illegal."
Abu Dhabi police have said that "all these forms of donation campaign are considered as begging, which will result in imprisonment for a minimum of six months and a fine of up to 100,000 dirhams."
Abu Dhabi police have instructed citizens and expatriates to be wary of such appeals and not to co-operate with them.
