Begging is punishable by up to a year in prison and a fine of up to 100,000 riyals

 A spokesman for the Public Order Department, Brigadier General Sami al-Shawirakh, said that begging was a crime in Saudi Arabia and would be punished.

According to the lesson website, he said that "all security personnel have been instructed to immediately arrest the beggars wherever they are seen."


"In Saudi Arabia, begging is not allowed in any form and for any reason," he said.

"Begging, inciting, aiding or abetting will be punishable by up to one year in prison and a fine of up to 100,000 riyals."

The spokesman directed the citizens and expatriates to set up charitable organizations which should be approached.

"Giving alms to beggars is tantamount to encouraging this heinous act."
