Telegram surpassed WhatsApp to become Russia's most popular messaging app

In Russia, the mobile chat application Telegram surpassed WhatsApp in popularity.

According to foreign media reports, Telegram has overtaken WhatsApp to become Russia's most popular messaging application.

According to reports, Russian mobile phone operator Megaphone announced on Monday that the use of telegrams in Russia has increased sharply since the start of the war in Ukraine on February 24.

According to Megaphone, Telegram's share of total messaging traffic increased from 43% to 63% in the first two weeks of March, while WhatsApp's share fell from 48% to 32% in the same period.

Earlier, the company Meta (owned by WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram) announced that it would allow violent messages against Russian citizens and Russian soldiers participating in the war in Ukraine.

Russia, meanwhile, banned Instagram and Facebook on Monday, calling them "extremist."

Russian officials have accused Ukraine of waging an anti-Russian campaign against the US technology company Meta and demanded that it ban all its social media platforms.
