Ukrainians welcome in Hungary but 'no place' for Afghans

When Russia started the war, Hungary opened its borders to thousands of refugees fleeing Ukraine, leaving other refugees helpless in the field of Serbia.

According to the Associated Press, after studying in Hungary for three years, Haseeb Qarizada applied for asylum in his native Afghanistan last August after the chaos in Afghanistan, but Hungarian authorities granted Qarizada six months. Earlier, he was deported to neighboring Serbia and taken to a country he did not even know existed.

"The police came and handcuffed me, they told me not to try to run away, not to try to fight us, not to do anything stupid," Qarizada told the Associated Press in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia.

After arriving in Serbia, Qarizada, 25, had no idea where he was, where to go or what to do.

"I was a student, and they turned my life upside down," he said. They didn't give me a chance to grab my clothes, my (phone) charger or my laptop or anything else I needed to travel. "

He told the AP that he had no idea where Serbia was, what language he spoke, what his culture was.

Hungarian police did not immediately respond to AP's request for comment on Qarizada's deportation in September.

Hungary's reputation is not good because of its treatment of migrants fleeing wars and poverty.

The first such case was reported by human rights activists in the region in 2017 when a 16-year-old Kurd from Iraq was deported from Hungary to Serbia, although he had initially entered Hungary from Romania.

A Cameroonian woman who recently entered Hungary from Romania was deported to Serbia last December. Another African woman who flew from Dubai, UAE a year ago, was also flown to Serbia.

Social activists have warned of discrimination against migrants and immigrants from the Middle East and Africa who have for years faced threats at the borders of Hungary, Croatia and other European countries.
