Can Brain Treatment Eliminate Chronic Back Pain?

SYDNEY: Psychiatric and mental health treatments can help alleviate chronic back pain, provided it is continued with medication and physical exercise, Australian scientists say.

This research is important because it examines 97 medical investigations into chronic back pain in which more than 13,000 volunteers participated.

The medical research, which spans several decades, examines the use and effectiveness of a total of 17 different measures to reduce back pain.

The review, published in the latest issue of the research journal "British Medical Journal" (BMJ), found that in the treatment of chronic back pain, whenever psychotherapy with medication and physiotherapy was used. Different measures were also taken and better results were obtained.

This means that patients who were treated with medication and physiotherapy had significantly less chronic back pain than those who underwent psychiatric treatment as well.

Not only did these patients experience less pain but they were also able to resume their daily routines.

The study, conducted at the University of Sydney, Australia, once again showed that physical therapy, as well as mental therapy, can lead to better outcomes.
