Motion Picture Academy has banned actor Will Smith from attending Oscars or any other academy event for 10 years after he slapped famous comedian Chris Rock.

According to the Associated Press, the move follows a meeting of the academy's board of governors to review Will Smith's slapping of Chris Rock.

A statement from the academy said: "The purpose of the 94th Oscars was to celebrate the achievements of those in our community who did a great job last year. The reason has faded.

Reacting to the academy's statement, American actor Will Smith said, "I accept and respect the decision of the academy."

He resigned from the academy last week during a meeting, calling his actions "shocking, painful and unforgivable."

The Oscars he won after Smith slapped Chris Rock will remain with him and he will be eligible to be nominated and win these (Oscars) for a period of 10 years but he will have to accept them. Can't attend the event.

The academy also apologized for its handling of the situation and for allowing Smith to accept the Best Actor award for "King Richard".

"It was an opportunity for us to set an example for our guests, spectators and our academy family around the world, but we failed," the academy said in a statement.

In a statement issued in the days following the Oscars, the academy said Smith had been asked to leave the ceremony but refused.

The academy, in a statement issued Friday, thanked Chris Rock for "keeping his spirits up in extraordinary circumstances."

It is believed that actor Will Smith slapped famous comedian Chris Rock on stage when Chris made fun of his wife Jedda Panket Smith.
