BANGALORE: Extremist Hindu gangs have also stopped selling beef in the Indian state of Karnataka after a ban on female students' hijabs and a ban on Muslim vendors from doing business at Hindu festivals.
According to Indian media, Bajrang Dal workers in the state of Karnataka stopped the sale of beef at a supermarket and even beat up waiters over a halal meat dish at a hotel.
The violence against the sale of beef began after a campaign by leaders of a Hindu extremist group in the Karnataka capital. Bajrang Dal leaders went to the bazaars and made speeches against the sale of beef and intimidated Muslim shopkeepers.
Extremist Hindu activists also distributed pamphlets calling for a ban on the sale of beef. Police arrested six Bajrang Dal workers at the request of Muslim traders.
It may be recalled that female students were banned from wearing hijab in Karnataka's educational institutions after which Muslim traders were barred from setting up stalls at Hindu festivals.
