Purchasing oil from Russia is not in India's interest, US threatens India

Washington / New Delhi: US President Joe Biden has warned the Indian Prime Minister that buying more oil from Russia would not be in India's favor.

According to the international news agency, US President Joe Biden talked to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the sanctions imposed on Russia through a video link.

In an hour-long conversation, President Biden told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi that further purchases of oil from Russia could hamper the US response to the war in Ukraine.

President Biden said he was aware of India's concerns over the deep ties between Russia and China, adding that India's reliance on Russia for oil purchases could make a difference in India's relations with the world.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he had proposed to the Russian President direct talks with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, which he also promised to consider.

During the talks, the two leaders also condemned the massacre of Russian troops in the Ukrainian town of Bocha.

After the talks, White House spokeswoman Jane Sackie told the media that President Joe Biden had made it clear to Prime Minister Modi that buying more oil from Russia was not in India's interest.

On the other hand, Indian Foreign Minister Subramanian J. Shankar told a news conference that our one-month purchase of oil from Russia is less than what Europe does in one afternoon. Therefore, the focus should not be on India but on Europe.

It should be noted that after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the United States has imposed several economic sanctions on Russia, including the purchase of oil, but India has recently bought oil from Russia.
