Robot dog deployed to guard 2,000-year-old ruined city

Rome: Italian authorities have assigned a robot dog to patrol the city of Pompeii, which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption 2,000 years ago.

Patrolling the ancient ruins of Pompeii, the robotic machine will identify security issues related to the city's ancient ruins and search for tunnels built by thieves.

The Pompeii Archaeological Park has announced that the robotic dog Spot, developed by the American firm Boston Dynamics, is now patrolling the ancient city that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption nearly 2,000 years ago.

Officials said the spot's duties included inspecting the remains of ancient buildings, reviewing the progress of repair work and inspecting the city's antiquities by digging tunnels for illegal acquisition.
