New Delhi: At least 25 people have died of heatstroke in the western Indian state of Maharashtra since the end of March.
According to Indian media, temperatures in different parts of the state have been recorded between 42 and 46 degrees Celsius so far in the last two weeks.
According to official figures, the highest death toll of 15 was recorded in Vidarbha region, followed by six in Marathwada and four in northern Maharashtra. A total of 381 cases of heatstroke have been registered in the state.
Authorities say the post-mortem report confirmed that six people had died of heatstroke, while the remaining 19 are awaiting reports.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that temperatures in central India could touch 47 degrees Celsius in the next few days.
It is to be noted that various states including the Indian states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Delhi have recorded extraordinary rise in temperature this year. The month of March recorded the highest average temperature in 122 years.
