Dinesh Gunawardena was sworn in as the new Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.

 Colombo: Leftist political party Member of Parliament Dinesh Gunawardena was sworn in as the 15th Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.


According to the world news agency, the Leader of the House and former minister Dinesh Ganawardena took oath as the Prime Minister, which was vacated if Ranil Wickramasinghe assumed the presidency in Sri Lanka, which is suffering from the worst financial crisis.



Newly elected President Ranil Wickremesinghe administered the oath of office to 73-year-old Prime Minister Dinesh Ganawardena in the Prime Minister's Office. Tight security arrangements were made on the occasion and a large number of protestors were present outside the Prime Minister's House.

The new Prime Minister, Dinesh Gunawardena, was appointed by President Ranil Wickramasinghe, both friends from school days.


It should be noted that Dinesh Gunawardena is a close associate and ally of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who fled Sri Lanka and resigned.


Dinesh Gunawardena is a seasoned politician whose father, Don Philip Rupasinghe Gunawardena, waged a long war against colonialism and imperialism in India and became prominent leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Jayaprakash Narayan and Krishna Menon.

Dinesh Gunawardena followed his father's left-wing politics and has been a member of Parliament continuously since 1977, serving as Minister of External Affairs, Education, Water and Drainage.


It should be noted that due to intense public protest and pressure, the president, prime minister and other ministers of this family had to resign and flee the country, after which the new president and prime minister have taken over the government.
