Amsterdam: Restricting food for 10 hours a day can potentially help people with type 2 diabetes keep their blood sugar levels low, a new study suggests.
The researchers said their research suggests that eating at regular intervals can protect against the negative effects of eating throughout the day.
The study included 14 people between the ages of 50 and 75 who had type 2 diabetes. These people were divided into two groups. One group was restricted from eating and the other group was allowed to eat for at least 14 hours for the next two to three weeks.
The restricted-time eating group was instructed to eat their usual diet during the 10-hour period before 6:00 p.m.
The researchers found in the study that eating at restricted times resulted in a reduction in 24-hour glucose levels, which was primarily a result of the drop in blood sugar during the night.
The study was conducted by researchers at the NUTRIM School of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism at Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands and the results of the study were published in Diabetologia.
