US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping have agreed to meet directly.
According to the French news agency AFP, President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping had a long telephone conversation of two hours and 17 minutes on Thursday.
Biden and Xi discussed the importance of a direct meeting and agreed that their teams should work to find a mutually agreeable time, a US official said on condition of anonymity.
The two countries described the telephone call as a robust discussion on several issues between the world's two largest economic powers.
Taiwan is a democratic country that has close relations with the United States, but China considers Taiwan a part of its own.
"Those who play with fire will eventually get burned," Chinese President Xi Jinping told the US president.
There is tension between the two countries over the issue of Taiwan.
The Chinese government is also angry over the expected visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.
Although US officials often visit Taiwan, Beijing sees Nancy Pelosi's visit as a major provocation. She is the second most important figure after the US President and, given her position, may travel with military transport.
China warned on Wednesday that Washington would "suffer the consequences" if Nancy Pelosi travels to Taiwan.
