A new study on gamers suggests that time spent playing video games has no positive effect on a person's health.
A team of researchers from the University of Oxford studied 39,000 players of seven video games for six weeks. The Oxford Internet Institute study measured the health of gamers by asking them about their life satisfaction and the emotions they felt, such as happiness, anger or frustration.
The study found that there was very little or no correlation between game playing and health, but motivation does play a role in gamer health.
However, the research acknowledged that more work is needed to reflect better facts regarding the effects of gaming.
Data for the study was obtained from players of seven popular games. These games include Animal Crossing, Apex Legend, Eve Online, Forza Horizon 4, Green Trezmo and The Crew 2.
The new research builds on a 2020 study that found that people who played video games frequently had slightly better health.
Professor Andrew Przybylski, a senior research fellow at the institute, said that this exciting research involved collecting a large amount of real playing data from games companies and players.
He said more studies are needed to better understand the true effects of video games.
