The ransom received in a cyber attack, the university returned double the money

 A university in the Netherlands has returned part of the money stolen in a cyber attack, which is now worth twice.

According to the news agency AFP, in 2019, the Netherlands's Southern Masterchit University's online system was attacked by 'Ranasmware'.

Through this software, cyber -invaders lock all the important and valuable data of the affected computer and then receive ransom to return access.


According to the newspaper Daily de Volkskant, the criminals hacked hundreds of Windows servers and backup systems, preventing 25,000 students and employees' scientific research, libraries and emails from the university's scientific research, libraries and emails.

The hackers demanded two million euros to return the data, which were to be paid in the form of two million eight thousand and bitcoin.

According to the newspaper report, a week later, the university administration surrendered to the hackers' demand. "The reason was that the data was feared to be lost and it was not possible for the students to take exams and continue to work on their thesis."

Dutch police detected a section of the ransom paid, which was transferred to a money laundering account in Ukraine.

In 2020, prosecutors seized the man's account, which had different crypto currency and also had a ransom paid by the university.


According to the newspaper, 'Now two years later, the money was shifted back to the Netherlands, and the amount paid is more than 40,000 euros, which is worth about 5 million euros.

The Southern Masterchat University will now get five million euros, which, according to the university director Michael Borjers, will be spent on deserving students rather than going into the general fund.
