China's use of psychiatric hospitals to detain social workers without meeting legal requirements has been revealed.
According to the AFP news agency, a non-governmental organization has said in its released report that Chinese authorities have been using psychiatric hospitals for decades to punish political prisoners.
In China, these psychiatric hospitals are known as 'Ankang'.Spain's "Safe Guard Defenders" organization said in its report released on Tuesday that despite the introduction of reforms in China in 2010, this procedure continues today.
The data in the report is based on interviews with victims and their families, which examined the accounts of 99 people who were forcibly detained in psychiatric hospitals on political grounds between 2015 and 2021.
According to the organization, in 2022, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) still incarcerates political opponents in psychiatric hospitals, even though the law was amended 10 years ago to prevent these practices.
According to the organization, the Communist Party can block access to the justice system for petitioners and social workers who are denied the right to a lawyer or to be prosecuted, and who are socially isolated as 'mentally ill'. .
The social organization says that with the collusion of CCP with doctors and hospitals, the victims are kept unnecessarily in every hospital and drugs are forcibly given.
The report said that the prisoners were subjected to physical and mental torture while they were kept in solitary confinement and given electric shocks.
Among the prisoners was a young girl who threw paint on a picture of Chinese President Xi Jinping in a live tweet.
In the past, social activists and Western governments have accused China of keeping Muslim minorities in campuses in China's western Xinjiang province where they are subjected to torture and forced labor. While China has declared these campuses as training centers and has adopted a position that training is given here to fight against terrorism.
