Miami: More than 800 people will hunt for the dangerous Burmese python in the humid land of the US state of Florida. The eight-day contest will win thousands of dollars in prizes for the most snake kills.
According to officials present at the opening of the annual event in Miami, the python hunting competition began on Friday morning, official local time, and continued until 5pm on August 15.
According to the news release, since 2000, more than 17,000 pythons have been killed by the Everglades' wetlands. The Burmese python is not a native Florida snake and its diet consists of birds, mammals and other reptiles.
According to officials, there is a $2,500 prize for the highest number of snake kills among experienced and novice hunters in both categories. There are additional prizes for the longest python hunt for both categories.
According to the rules and regulations, every python must be dead and the hunter will be disqualified if the snake is killed in a brutal manner or killed by a local snake.
