Smokers Have Weaker Hearts, Research

Copenhagen: According to a new study, smokers have a weaker heart than non-smokers.

A study conducted at Harlew and Gentoft Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark, found that the more people in the study smoked, the worse their heart function was, but when someone quit the habit, their Heart function improved.

Dr Eva Holt, author of the study, said: "It is well known that smoking causes the arteries to clog, which can lead to artery-related heart disease and stroke.

He said that the research revealed that smoking weakens and thickens the heart. This means that the left ventricle of their heart receives less blood and has less power to circulate blood throughout the body. The more people smoke, the worse their heart functions.

According to the World Health Organization, 8 million people die every year due to tobacco. Among preventable deaths, smoking is responsible for 50 percent of deaths caused by heart attacks and strokes.

The study used data from the 5th Copenhagen City Heart Study, which examined cardiovascular disease in the population.
