Drinking a glass of milk a day may help prevent type 2 diabetes, research suggests

Naples: Drinking a glass of milk and eating yogurt daily may help prevent type 2 diabetes, while high consumption of beef, mutton, processed and chicken meat may have the opposite effect, a study has found.

Based on the results of the Italian study, researchers recommend fish meat and eggs as alternative foods for high meat eaters.

The findings by scientists come amid a growing trend against dairy products. In this case, experts have appeared to warn people that milk, butter and cheese contain high amounts of calories and saturated fat (fat that does not melt at room temperature) that can cause a number of health problems.

To reduce the risks of type 2 diabetes, experts recommend eating plant-based foods such as whole grains, vegetables, fruits, pulses, and low-fat milk and yogurt.

However, experts at the University of Naples Federico II say that not all forms of animal protein are equally nutritious.

Type 2 diabetes occurs when cells become resistant to insulin. Insulin is the hormone that keeps blood sugar stable.

If not treated in time, it can be fatal and cause other serious problems including heart disease, amputation of hands and feet and loss of vision.

Known as the silent killer, the disease affects 45 million Britons and 30 million Americans each year.
