LONDON: Popular video sharing app Tik Tok may be fined up to 27 million pounds in the UK. The company may face damages for breaching UK data protection law by failing to protect children's privacy.
According to media reports, the UK's Information Commissioners Office (ICO) has issued a notice of intent to the social media company. It is a legal document that paves the way for possible fines.
The company also allegedly failed to provide comprehensive, transparent and easily understandable regular information to its customers and forwarded 'special category data' without any legal basis.
Tik Tok is a very popular application among the youth and is used by more than one billion people worldwide every month.
The application, owned by local Beijing company ByteDance, could be fined up to four percent of TikTok's annual revenue by the ICO.
Information Commissioner John Edwards said: "We all want children to be able to learn and experience the digital world, but with appropriate data privacy protections.
