Contact with the Afghan Taliban does not require a third country: the United States

Thomas West, the special representative of the United States of America for Afghanistan, says that there has been an increase in the attacks of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan in Pakistan, which is a matter of concern. This is a challenge that Pakistan is dealing with.

In an interview to Voice of America, US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West said that there has been an increase in TTP attacks against Pakistan over the past year. These challenges were also discussed with his Minister of State in Pakistan, Hina Rabbani Khar. This is not a new challenge.

Thomas West said that he stayed in Pakistan for two and a half days two weeks ago, discussed common interests in Afghanistan, and was happy to talk with security and civilian officials in Islamabad.

He said that Pakistan is an important country for America and we will continue to work together. "Pakistan is an important partner of America, we thank Pakistan for hosting Afghan refugees for 40 years."

US special representative for Afghanistan Thomas West said that we do not need a third country to facilitate communication with the Taliban, he and other members of the US government are in regular contact with the Taliban.

He further said that he does not think there will be any practical partnership between the US and the Taliban, the Taliban have made it clear that this is their fight.

"The effort is to ensure that they (the Taliban) fulfill their commitments outlined in the Doha Agreement to ensure that terrorists do not pose a threat to the United States or its allies," said Thomas West.

Regarding the US attack on al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, Thomas West said that the Taliban's sheltering of Ayman al-Zawahiri was a clear violation of the Doha agreement.
