Kuwait: Ex-member of parliament and high official jailed and fined

The Kuwaiti Court of Appeal sentenced Major General Sheikh Mazen Al-Jarrah and Nawaf Al-Shalahi to 5 years in prison and 1.3 million dinars after being found guilty of money laundering and bribery.

According to the Arabic daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, the Court of Appeal overturned a previous ruling by the Criminal Court, which was issued in March 2022, that had released Al-Jarrah without bail.

The Court of Appeal has sentenced Sheikh Mazen Al-Jraj and former candidate of the Kuwaiti Parliament, Nawaf Al-Shalahi, to 5 years in prison and a fine of 1.360 thousand dinars.

The said case is the second case related to a Bangladeshi Member of Parliament. The case of a Bangladeshi member of parliament came to light in June 2020 in which Kuwaiti security officials and politicians were accused of money laundering and human trafficking.

Bangladeshi Member of Parliament Muhammad Shaheed was arrested by the Kuwaiti authorities on June 7, 2020. He had admitted that he had been supplying workers from Bangladesh on bogus employment contracts with the help of senior officials of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior and the Manpower Agency. They used to do this work by giving money.

A Bangladeshi member of parliament was sentenced to 7 years in prison with hard labor in 2020 after being found guilty of human trafficking. The conviction was followed by expulsion from Kuwait and a fine of 2.71 million Kuwaiti dinars.

The Bangladeshi MP was arrested in June 2020 from his house in the Musharraf area. He was accused of sending hundreds of workers from Bangladesh on commission to Kuwait, taking contracts by bribing officials and paying workers annually in exchange for employment contracts. Based on the receipt of money included.
