American defense minister's meeting with his Chinese counterpart, will the ice melt?

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has met with his Chinese counterpart Wei Fenghe in Cambodia, which is seen as an important step to control the tension between the parties.

According to the French news agency AFP, the meeting on the sidelines of the defense ministers' conference in Siem Reap, Cambodia is the first meeting between the two leaders since June.

Tensions between the two countries were seen peaking when US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan, prompting China to express its displeasure and start military exercises.

However, the United States said that it had no intentions to create tension between the two countries, but a few days later, several American officials visited Taiwan one after the other, including a congressional representative.

China claims sovereignty over neighboring Taiwan, which it calls an independent nation, and last month conducted military exercises near its border, firing missiles over it. He was also accused of violating the border limits.

In response to China's concerns, after US President Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi also made it clear that there has been no change in her 'one China policy' and informal and defensive relations with Taiwan are also part of her policy.

On November 14, President Joe Biden met with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for three hours at the Group of 20 summit in Bali.

This was followed by a meeting between the Chinese President and US Vice President Kamala Harris during the Asia-Pacific Summit in Bangkok.

Chinese state media quoted President Xi Jinping as saying that he told Kamala Harris in the meeting that his meeting with President Biden was constructive and important for the next stage of China-US relations.
