"It is impossible to hold a second independence referendum in Scotland without the will of the British government."

A second independence referendum cannot be held in Scotland without the consent of the British government.

Britain's Supreme Court ruled that the proposed referendum was advisory only, but that any such move would require parliamentary approval because of the significant political implications.

On this occasion, the head of the Scottish National Party, Nicola Sturgeon, said that she respects the court decision, but at the same time, she has accused the British government of suppressing democratic rights.
