Lima: After the ouster of President Pedro Castillo, Peru's new government has declared a 30-day state of emergency to deal with violent protests.
According to a foreign news agency, the defense minister announced that "the police, in cooperation with the armed forces, will ensure the safety of personal property, strategic infrastructure and the safety of all Peruvians."He said that citizens cannot gather or move in one place during the state of emergency.
Peru's new president, Dina Bolvarate, has pleaded with protesters to remain calm. Regarding the demand for immediate elections, he has said that the elections will be held after a year.
Protesters have blocked roads in Peru's capital and many rural areas. Protesters have called for the release of former president Pedro Castillo, the resignation of new president Dina Bolvarate, the election of a new president and the immediate scheduling of general elections to replace all members of Congress.
