Russia rains shells near Ukraine's nuclear plant

Kyiv: Russia rained artillery shells near Europe's largest nuclear plant in Ukraine.

According to the World News Agency, Ukraine's 31st Independence Day should be celebrated on August 24, the day Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union. This year Ukraine is at war and Russia bombed just two days before Independence Day.

Russian missiles and shells hit targets near Odessa, Ukraine. Apart from being a nuclear power plant, this area is also a Black Sea port and a grain export hub.

The Russian bombardment caused widespread destruction in the city and many buildings were reduced to rubble. Citizens moved to safer places as the city echoed with the sound of missiles and shells throughout the day.

Last night, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his video address expressed fear that Russia will show aggression on the occasion of Independence Day to sabotage the Independence Day celebrations.

Volodymyr Zelensky warned Russia to refrain from cruel trials of detained Ukrainian soldiers. He called on the world powers to play their role in stopping Russia from committing war crimes.
