Thailand's Constitutional Court suspended the Prime Minister

Thailand's Constitutional Court has suspended Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha from performing official duties.

According to the foreign news agency, a request was filed by the main opposition party of Thailand to review the 8-year term limit of the Prime Minister, on which the Constitutional Court decided to hear and suspended the Prime Minister.

According to the court order, Prayuth Chan-ocha will not be able to perform his duties as the Prime Minister until the case is decided.

The court has given 15 days time to Prayuth Chan Ocha to submit his reply.

According to the news agency, in the petition filed by the opposition, it was decided that the time spent by the Prime Minister as the military chief should also be counted in the constitutionally fixed 8-year period.

It should be noted that in 2014, Thailand's army chief Prayuth Chan-o-chan took power after overthrowing the elected government, after which he became the civilian prime minister in 2019 following elections held under a military-drafted constitution.

The next general election in Thailand will be held in May next year.
