World's first hydrogen train service launched in Germany

Germany has introduced the world's first hydrogen-powered train service, aiming to promote the environmentally friendly fuel.

For this service, 14 trains have been manufactured by the French company Alstom and supplied to the German state of Lower Saxony, which will replace the diesel-powered trains.

These new trains will run on a 60-mile track.

China's unique train that can travel without electricity

Stefan Schrank, project manager of Alstom, said that this is the first train service in the world that will travel on hydrogen fuel.

20 percent of trains in Germany currently run on diesel and the new technology will be used as an alternative.

The new train is named Coradia iLint.

2 hydrogen trains have been operating since 2018 but this is the first time this revolutionary technology has been used for an entire service.

The company is developing these trains for France, Germany and Italy and according to an estimate, hydrogen models will replace 2,500 to 3,000 diesel trains in Germany.

Currently, one out of every two trains in Europe is powered by diesel, but hydrogen-powered models are rapidly being developed.

A prototype hydrogen was introduced in May by the French company as well as the German company Siemens, which is expected to be officially introduced to the market in 2024.

Oxygen combines with hydrogen to produce electricity that powers the train.
