Boat full of Hindu pilgrims capsizes in Bangladesh, 24 dead

A boat carrying Hindu pilgrims capsized in Bangladesh, killing 24 people and nearly as many missing.

According to the news agency AFP, the police officials said that there were more people on board than the capacity of the boat.

Local police officer Shafiqul Islam said that "rescue workers and divers are continuing to search for more bodies."

He said that the majority of the dead are women and children.

According to the police, 50 people were on board the boat.

Hindu pilgrims were on their way to a centuries-old temple in the middle of the Karutwa River near the town of Buda in northern Bangladesh when their boat suddenly capsized and sank.

According to another police official, 25 people are still missing.

According to local media reports, ten people were rescued and are being treated at the hospital.

Footage aired on a local news channel showed the boat full of people suddenly overturned and the passengers fell into the murky waters of the river.

People standing on the bank 20 meters away from the accident site started shouting after seeing the boat overturning. At the time of the accident, the weather was clear and the river was not in flood.

Thousands of Hindu pilgrims visit the Bodhiswari temple every year in the Muslim-majority country of Bangladesh.
