Skilled and Labor Shortage, Australia Announces Increase in Immigration

The Australian government has announced that it will increase the number of permanent immigration from 35 thousand to 195 thousand in the current financial year.

According to the Associated Press news agency, the announcement was made on Friday at a time when Australia is facing a shortage of skills and workers.

Speaking at a two-day summit of 140 representatives from local governments, trade unions, business and industry, Home Affairs Minister Claire O'Neill said that next year until June 30, 2023, the country will bring in skilled workers to deal with the pandemic. Skills shortages can be addressed.

The Minister of Home Affairs said that in the last two years in the nursing sector in Australia, workers have been working continuously in two to three shifts, flights have to be canceled due to lack of staff at airports, while fruits are spoiling on trees because Manpower not available for unloading.

O'Neill said, "Our number one priority is to provide jobs for Australians and that is why the conference focused on training women and the underserved."

He said that the effects of the Corona epidemic are so great that despite doing all this, there will be a shortage of thousands of workers, at least for a short period of time.

The Home Secretary said many of the "best and brightest minds" were heading to Canada, Germany and the UK instead of coming to Australia.
