What is the issue of leaking 'indecent' videos of female students in Chandigarh University?

Protests are ongoing in a university hostel in Chandigarh in the Indian state of Punjab over the alleged leakage of indecent videos of girls.

According to Indian channel NDTV, in view of the fears of escalation of the protest, the hostel management closed the entrance to prevent more girls from joining the protest.

In videos aired on Indian media, some girls can be seen jumping over gates to join the protest.

The protest started on Saturday night when reports of a female student committing suicide after an alleged indecent video was leaked in the hostel of Chandigarh University.

In the news circulating on social media, it was also claimed that indecent videos of about 60 girls were recovered from the phone of a girl living in the hostel.

However, the university administration in a statement has denied the news about the students making videos or attempting suicide.

A statement from the university administration said that 'no indecent video was made of any girl except one girl who made the video herself and shared it with her friend.'

Police have arrested the student who shared her video and said she had sent her personal videos to a person in Himachal Pradesh.

According to the Indian news agency Press Trust of India (PTI), Punjab's senior police officer Gurpreet Dev says that "about four thousand female students live in the hostel and one of them has been arrested."

He further said that the phone of the arrested girl has been sent to the cyber crime wing for further investigation.

A video has gone viral on social media in which a girl can be seen confessing to the rest of the girls that 'I made the video and deleted it at the same time.'
