Clashes between students and police in Tehran University, many arrested

At a university in the capital of Iran, Tehran, students have clashed with police officers and several people have been arrested.

The AFP news agency, citing Iran's official media and human rights organizations, said that security personnel used tear gas and pellet guns on hundreds of protesting students at Sharif University of Technology in Tehran.

According to reports, human rights organizations have expressed concern over the violence in the university.

According to the Iranian news agency Maher, the students were also chanting slogans of 'woman, life and freedom' and 'death is good with dishonor'. Later, the country's science minister reached the university and tried to control the situation and calm the students.

A video released by the Oslo-based Iran Human Rights Group shows security officers on motorcycles chasing fleeing students into an underground parking lot.

While another video captures students being taken away with their faces covered with black cloths.

In other footage, gunshots and people screaming can be heard and a large number of people running down a street.

The Iran Human Rights Group wrote in a tweet on Sunday night that "tonight security personnel attacked Sharif University in Tehran and the sound of firing is also heard."

Similarly, in a video clip that has surfaced, people can be heard chanting slogans like 'Don't be afraid, we are all together.'

Iran Human Rights says that this video is from Shariati metro station in Tehran.

The American human rights group "Center for Human Rights in Iran" says that the videos of Sharif University, in which the protesters are being tortured while those arrested are being hidden, are alarming.

According to Mehr News Agency, Sharif University has announced that all the classes will be virtual from Monday for the protection of students after the incidents of violence.

The series of protests that began with the death of a woman Mehsa Amini in police custody on September 16 is increasing, while dozens have died in violent incidents, including security personnel.
