Japanese filmmaker sentenced to 10 years in prison in Myanmar

The Myanmar court sentenced the Japanese filmmaker to 10 years in prison.

According to foreign media reports, the documentary filmmaker from Japan was arrested in July along with two Myanmar nationals who were filming and videoing anti-military protests in Yangon, Myanmar's largest city.

According to media reports, a Myanmar court sentenced the filmmaker to 10 years in prison for inciting anti-military sentiments and violating communications laws.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry confirmed the citizen's sentence, saying the 26-year-old filmmaker had been sentenced to three years in prison for incitement and seven years for violating the Telecommunications Act.

It should be noted that this situation arose in Myanmar when the army overthrew the government in February 2021, after which some groups rose up against the army.
