Ukraine claims to have captured Russia's logistics center in what is being hailed as a major breakthrough.
According to the British news agency Reuters, the capture of the logistics hub in the occupied territory of Ukraine Lyman will help the Ukrainian troops to advance and also limit the Russian supply line.
This significant success of the Ukrainian army is also being described as a shock to Russian President Putin, who on Friday announced the annexation of some areas of Ukraine to Russia, which were located near Lyman.
Kiev and Western countries condemned the announcement as illegal.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said on Sunday evening that the success of the military forces was not limited to the recapture of Lyman. He said that the Ukrainian soldiers have liberated the two important areas of Kherson, Arkanhilske and Myrolivka from the Russian occupation.
Ukrainian agency Interfax quoted Serhii Chirotai, the spokesman of the Ukrainian army, as saying that "the village of Torske in Donetsk, which is 15 kilometers from Lyman, has also been liberated."
Russia's defense minister said on Saturday that he was withdrawing troops from the Lyman region "in view of the threat of encirclement."
He did not mention Leman in the day-to-day fighting, but did say that Russian forces destroyed seven artillery and missile bases in the Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhya, Mykolaiv-Donetsk regions.
It should be noted that the Russian military captured Leman in May and the area has since been used as a logistics hub for operations in nearby areas.
