Claim of drone attack on Crimea, 'Russian forces on alert'

The Russian-annexed Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea has been targeted by drones, while Moscow has said its military is on "alert".

According to the AFP news agency, the drone attack on Crimea took place at a time when Ukraine, on the one hand, has managed to take back the possession of Kherson, while on the other hand, Moscow has made a statement about strengthening its position in Crimea.

The governor of the Crimean administrative region of Sevastopol told the pro-Russian Telegram channel that there was a drone attack and that two drones were shot down.

The governor said that the infrastructure was not damaged in the drone attack, but urged the citizens to remain calm.

The Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea was annexed by Russia in 2014. Crimea is home to Russia's most important military bases and the same area was also used to attack Ukraine.

For the past few months, Ukrainian forces have been advancing towards Crimea, while the recent withdrawal of Russian forces from Kherson has been hailed as a major victory for Ukraine.

The city of Kherson is the only regional capital that Russia captured after the invasion and has been the focus of Ukraine's counteroffensive, while the city is the only land route to the Crimean peninsula.

Since the invasion of Ukraine in February this year, there have been several explosions at or near Russian military installations in Crimea, while the Russian navy port in Sevastopol was also attacked in October.

On the other hand, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kolba, has told the European Union that its cooperation is very important.

"If we Ukrainians are not tired, the rest of Europe does not have the moral and political right to be tired either."

Ukraine's foreign minister called on the European Union to impose more sanctions on Russia that could affect Russia's missile industry.
