Investigations against Trump, war crimes expert hired

The US Department of Justice has hired a war crimes prosecutor to investigate former President Donald Trump.

According to the British news agency Reuters, US Attorney General Merrick Garland has named Jack Smith as special counsel, who has extensive experience in war crimes investigations.

Jack Smith will report to the Department of Justice after reviewing former President Donald Trump's use of sensitive documents and attempts to overturn the 2020 election.

The announcement of the name of Jack Smith by the United States Department of Justice has come three days after the announcement of former President Donald Trump in which he announced his participation in the presidential elections in 2024.

Special counsels are sometimes appointed to investigate political and sensitive matters, and in the services they perform, they are not bound by the leadership of the Department of Justice, but act independently.

After the nomination, Jack Smith said in a statement that "under my watch, the investigation will not be stopped or slowed down."

According to him, "I will make decisions independently and will proceed with the investigation so that the result comes out according to the facts and the law."

Jack Smith will review and investigate all matters involving official and sensitive documents. It will explore how they were used after Donald Trump left the White House last year, and how they hindered a peaceful transition of power after the 2020 election.

Attorney General Merrick Garland says, "The appointment of a special counsel at a time like this is the right step."

On the other hand, former President Donald Trump has called this appointment suspicious.

"This is a terrible turn of abuse of power, which began a long time ago," he told party workers in Florida.

Journalists also asked President Joe Biden stinging questions about the appointment of the Special Counsel, but he did not give a clear answer.

Similarly, a spokesperson of the White House said on condition of anonymity that he (White House) has nothing to do with this appointment.
