French President Emmanuel McChrystal has said that several European countries are working to open a joint mission in Afghanistan that would allow the return of their ambassadors.
According to the British news agency Reuters, after the Taliban's control over Afghanistan, the Western countries are facing a difficult situation on how to maintain contact with Kabul.
The United States and other Western nations closed their embassies in Kabul after the Taliban took control and expelled their diplomats."We are thinking of a joint mission of several European countries," the French president told reporters in Doha before leaving for Saudi Arabia. A common ground for many European countries where our ambassadors will be present.
The French president said it was a political move in a different way than political affiliation with the Taliban and recognition of them.
"As soon as we open the mission, we will be represented there very soon," he added.
President Emmanuel McKeown said he still needs to address security issues.
One week ago, after talks with the Taliban, the European Union said it could open a mission soon, but the Taliban government would not be recognized. On Friday, France announced that it had successfully completed the evacuation of 300 people from Afghanistan, most of them Afghans, with the help of Qatar.
The United States, Europe and other countries are reluctant to formally recognize the Pashtun-majority Taliban. They are accused of backtracking on the promises of a comprehensive government.
The Taliban have been repeatedly urged by the United States and Europe to respect women, ethnic and religious minorities.
