He took everything that saved Kiana Parsons Perez from being intimidated. Strong winds destroyed the building in which she lived, but strong winds pushed her under a pile of rubble.
According to US broadcaster CNN, Parsons Perez is one of several workers trapped under the rubble of a candle factory in Kentucky's Mayfield after the storm on Friday."It happened very quickly," he said, describing the tornado at the factory.
"Everything was shaken and then it quickly fell on us."
It was one of 50 hurricanes to hit at least eight states. These include Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee.
Strong winds tore down power lines, ripped off the roofs of buildings and left scores of people in dire straits.
More than 100 people are feared dead, according to state and local officials, at least 80 from Kentucky.
Meanwhile, aid workers in the United States have stepped up efforts to find those missing in Sunday's hurricane. Hurricanes have turned cities into ruins in many states.
According to the French news agency AFP, the destroyed buildings include a candle factory in Kentucky where there was widespread destruction.
State Governor Andy Bashir, meanwhile, says the search for missing people in Mayfield, a town that has been completely destroyed by the storm, could be futile.
President Joe Biden has called the hurricane one of the "biggest" hurricane outbreaks in US history.
"We do not yet know how many lives were lost and what the extent of the damage was," he said.
He sent heads of the Homeland Security Department and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to Kentucky to review the situation, and promised full federal assistance.
Despite the rising death toll, rescue workers are conducting several search operations to help evacuate civilians from their homes and other places.
Andy Bashir said more than 80 people have been killed in Kentucky alone, many of them Mayfield workers. He also confirmed the deaths of 10 more people.
"That number is close to 100," the governor told CNN.
About 40 of the 110 workers at the candle factory on Friday night have been rescued.
Meanwhile, at least six people were killed in an Amazon warehouse in Edwards Will, southern Illinois, where they were working night shifts.
Emergency department personnel worked at both locations until Sunday night, and Federal Emergency Management Agency agents and Red Cross volunteers arrived at the scene in Kentucky.
