 1 billion 28 million dollars in prize money has been won in the US Mega Millions Jackpot, breaking all previous records.

According to the American news agency Associated Press, the winning lottery ticket was purchased in the state of Illinois on Friday night.

The jackpot is the third largest lottery prize in the United States.

The jackpot was so big because since April 2015, no ticket had matched the six selected numbers of the game.

In the last 29 draws, no ticket has managed to win the jackpot.

This amount of 1.28 billion dollars is for the winners who take the option to receive the money on an annual basis for a period of 29 years.

Several winners opted for the cash option, after which the amount was reduced to $74.72 million.

The odds of winning the jackpot are one in 302.5 million tickets.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states, including Washington DC and the US Virgin Islands.

The jackpot is coordinated by state lotteries.
