Smog in India, a helmet that will give motorcyclists 'fresh air'

Every year with the arrival of winter in Delhi, the capital of India, the smog in the air increases due to which the citizens fall victim to various diseases. This is the reason why New Delhi has already started measures to control smog.

According to the British news agency Reuters, the government is promoting motorcycle helmets with filters and a fan in the back that officials say can remove up to 80 percent of pollution.

State agencies have pumped thousands of dollars into Shellios Technolabs, a startup whose founder Amit Pathak started working on helmets in a basement in 2016.

This was the year when air pollution hit the headlines for the first time and made New Delhi unbreathable from mid-December to February.

Dust, vehicular smoke and burning of crop residues in nearby states add to the alarming levels of smog.

"Inside a home or an office, you can have an air purifier, but people riding a motorcycle have no protection," said Pathak, an electrical engineer.

So his company has designed a helmet with an air-cleaning unit that includes a replaceable filter membrane and a fan that runs for six hours on a battery and can be charged via a microUSB slot. can

Pathak added that sales of the helmets began in 2019 and tests by an independent laboratory on the streets of New Delhi have confirmed that its use can protect users from pollution by more than 80 percent.

India's Ministry of Science and Technology says that due to helmets, bikers will be able to breathe fresh air.

Each helmet sells for Rs 4,500 or almost four times the price of a normal helmet, which is beyond the reach of many motorcyclists in India.

Shellios has tied up with a major manufacturer to produce a lighter version with thermoplastic material instead of fiberglass, a move that will cut costs.

The new version of the helmet is expected to come out in a few months.
