Five Syrian soldiers killed in Israeli attack on Damascus: state media

Syrian state media say five Syrian soldiers have been killed in an Israeli airstrike near Damascus airport on Saturday.

Syria's official news agency SANA (Syrian Arab News Agency) quoted a military official as saying that "as a result of the offensive action, five soldiers were killed and some financial losses were incurred."

The statement added that the airstrikes were carried out from the north-east direction of Lake Tiberias, targeting the Damascus airport and some targets south of Damascus.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor confirmed that five Syrian soldiers were killed in the strikes, while two Iranian-backed fighters were also killed.

The monitor, which relies on a wide network of sources inside Syria, says Israel has targeted locations where Iran-backed groups are stationed near Damascus airport and in the Damascus countryside.

Last month, three soldiers were killed in an Israeli attack in rural areas around the capital Damascus and south of the coastal province of Tartus.

In June, Israeli airstrikes closed Damascus airport for nearly two weeks.

During the past month, the Israeli Air Force has targeted Aleppo airport twice.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights war monitor said at the time that "these attacks targeted a weapons depot belonging to an Iran-backed militia."

Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes against its northern neighbor since Syria's civil war began in 2011, targeting government troops as well as Iran-backed coalition forces and Hezbollah fighters.

Although Israel rarely comments on individual attacks, it has admitted to carrying out hundreds of attacks.

Israel says its air campaign is necessary to prevent arch-enemy Iran from gaining a foothold on its doorstep.
