Myanmar; 6 children were killed and 17 injured in the military helicopter attack on the school

Rangoon: A military helicopter fired indiscriminately at a school during an operation against insurgents in Myanmar, killing 6 students and injuring 17 others.

According to Reuters, eyewitnesses said that a military helicopter fired indiscriminately at a school in Sengog, Myanmar, after which army personnel entered the building and conducted a thorough search.

Eyewitnesses told Reuters on condition of anonymity that six children were killed and 17 injured in the shooting by Myanmar's military helicopter. The dead and injured were shifted to a nearby hospital where the condition of 3 injured is said to be critical.

A spokesman for Myanmar's military said the school building was occupied by armed insurgents from where they organized terrorism, but there was no evidence that any militants were arrested or weapons were found in the operation.

It should be noted that on February 1 last year, Myanmar's army overthrew the democratic government and seized power and imposed a state of emergency in the country and detained Aung San Suu Kyi.

19 months into the military coup, while political leaders are under arrest or exiled, the army rulers have yet to gain popular support and the military leadership has used unrelenting force to quell the protests.

This year, 5 people, including a social worker active in support of the democratic government and against the military coup and a member of the assembly of Aung San Suu Kyi's party, have been hanged as rebels of the military government.
