Briton sentenced 21 years after assaulting female partner

A UK court has sentenced a man to death after 21 years of assaulting his female partner.

According to the French news agency AFP, on Thursday, a judge at the Bristol Crown Court in West England sentenced the criminal, Steven Craig, to a minimum of 15 years in prison.

Briton Steven Craig set his partner Jacqueline Kirk on fire 21 years ago by dousing her with petrol, which led to her death in 2019.

In April 1998, 58-year-old Steven Craig doused his partner in petrol and set her on fire. In the same year, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison, which he has already served, for the offense of grievous bodily harm and intent to assault.

In 2019, Jacqueline Kirk died of injuries sustained in a burn accident.

Two years after the death of Jacqueline Kirk, 61, her partner was charged with murder, while a jury last month convicted Steven Craig in a unanimous verdict.

The court was told that Jacqueline Kirk suffered burns to 35% of her body, which caused her death 20 years later.

After the accident, Jacqueline had to spend nine months in hospital and underwent 14 operations.

Even the doctors were amazed how Jacqueline survived for so long after suffering such severe injuries. Jacqueline was 41 years old at the time of the attack.

Her daughter said that Jacqueline saw the marriage of the two children in her lifetime and later became a grandmother.

"We (doctors) were told that she would not live for more than 10 years, so we took full advantage of that time."

In August 2019, Jacqueline was taken to hospital complaining of abdominal swelling but died the next day.

His partner, Steven Craig, has admitted assault but denied responsibility for the death.
