'Historical moment for humanity', the world's population reached eight billion

November 15, 2022, this date will now forever be remembered on the planet as today the world population will reach the eight billion milestone.

According to the French news agency AFP, according to an estimate of the United Nations Population Division, a child born anywhere on Tuesday will be the eight billionth person in the world.

"This is an opportunity to celebrate diversity and progress while also recognizing humanity's shared responsibility for the planet," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement.

Some worry that eight billion people is too many for planet Earth, while experts say the biggest problem is the overuse of resources by the richest.

"Some people are concerned that our world is overpopulated," said Natalia Kanem, head of the UN Population Fund. I will clearly say that the large number of human beings is not a cause of fear.

"There are two sides to the question of how many people there is room for on Earth: natural limits and human choices," Joel Cohen of Rockefeller University's Laboratory of Population told AFP.

"As a result of our choices, humans are consuming more biological resources, such as forests and land, than the planet can regenerate each year," he said.

For example, overuse of fossil fuels leads to the release of more carbon dioxide, which is responsible for global warming.

"We are fools," Cohen said. We lack foresight. We are greedy. We do not use the information we hold. That's where the choices and the problems lie.''However, he rejects the idea that humans are a blight on the planet.

The current population is three times higher than the 2.5 billion it was in 1950, Rachel Snow of the United Nations Population Fund told AFP, adding that the rate of world population growth slowed dramatically in the early 1960s.

The United Nations estimates that the population will reach about 8.5 billion in 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050, and 10.4 billion in the 2080s.
